What's been going on lately
Where's version 2024.4.0?Rest assured, Tab Shelf development is still very active! I've been pretty busy with multiple important life things lately, so I've been trying to squeeze in some time for Tab Shelf here and there.
Where's version 2024.4.0?
Version 2024.4.0 was slated to feature a major redesign and a whole host of headline new features. This included session saving and a reworked tab filter. However, early builds suffered from severe performance issues and I just felt uneasy with the user experience of the redesign.
I restarted development on 2024.4.0 in mid October, using version 2024.3.9 as its base and reduced the scope of the redesign. A significant amount of time has been put into resolving performance issues, and so far it's remarkably more performant than 2024.3.9.
Many requested features over the last 2-3 months originally slated for 2024.4.0 will be pushed to 2024.5.0. Version 2024.4.0 simply has too many critical performance fixes which I think need to be rolled out first.
A saved tab groups miracle
Google Chrome's stable channel has started to A/B test a new version of saved tab groups. This time, they appear to play nice with the tab API that Tab Shelf relies on. This means that, soon, Tab Shelf should be able to manage saved tab groups.
This has also led me to consider reducing the scope of the session saving feature so that I could allocate more time to working on the reworking tab filter and further performance issues.
Much ado about sidebar sizes
I've been getting plenty of feedback lately asking for a reduced sidebar width, a la Microsoft Edge and Firefox vertical tabs implementation (only show favicons, and expand to show titles when moving your cursor over the sidebar).
Unfortunately this is not something that I have control over. It's completely in the hands of the browser vendor, in this case, either Google or Microsoft. However, using Tab Shelf in Vivaldi or Brave will allow you to manually shrink the size of the sidebar even more than in Chrome or Edge.
